The End of PLL Group Play: Recap, Review, and Looking Forward

With Group Play in the PLL Championship over and the Elimination Round on the horizon, we’ve rounded up the highlights of the past week for our Epoch athletes and their teams.

The Whipsnakes started the season hot with a win over the Redwoods in a rematch of last year’s championship game and never took the foot off the gas. The Whips extended their hot streak to a 17-11 win over the Archers in the last game of Group play, securing the top seed going into elimination play. Epoch Athlete Matt Rambo broke the PLL single-game record for points in that game with 8 assists and 2 goals. Rambo finishes group play with 21 points and 15 assists. As the #1 seed, the Whipsnakes get a bye for the first set of games in the Elimination Round and will face the winner of the Redwoods/Waterdogs matchup (taking place Aug 4th) on August 6th.

Archers LC started the Championship series strong, going 3-0 (including a victory over the now second-seeded Chrome) before a loss to the Whipsnakes in the last game of group play. Their impressive play throughout the week earned them the third seed going into the Elimination Round. Epoch Athlete and defenseman Matt McMahon finished with 8 ground balls and 7 caused turnovers as a part of a strong defensive core for the Archers. McMahon and the Archers will face the Atlas at 10:30pm ET on August 4th to begin the Elimination Round.

It’s clear that Chrome LC came back with one thing on its mind after a mediocre first season – winning. The team started hot and went 2-0 before a loss to the Archers in Game 9. Showing grit and resiliency, Chrome never lost focus and ended group play with a win over the Waterdogs. Defenseman and Epoch Athlete Jesse King finished with 6 points, 1 assist, and 2 ground balls as a key part of a shifty and determined Chrome. The team goes into the Elimination Round as the second seed and will face the Chaos at 5:30pm ET on August 4th.

Despite a tough loss to the Whipsnakes in first game of the Championship Series and another to Chrome just days later, the Redwoods regrouped and recovered to finish the week on a two-game win streak, beating Chaos and Atlas. In doing so, the Redwoods earned the fourth seed in the Elimination Round. Breakout LSM and Epoch Athlete John Sexton leads the Redwoods with 8 ground balls and garnered 8 caused turnovers during the four games as a key part of the Redwoods’ defense and transition. The Redwoods will play the #5 seed Waterdogs at 8:00pm ET on August 4th.

Though competing well and frequently forcing close games, Chaos ends Group Play as the 7th seed with a record of 0-4. Attackman Connor Fields heads into the Elimination Round with 7 points and 1 assist; LSM Troy Reh finished the week with 11 ground balls, 1 caused turnover, 3 points, and 1 two-point goal; and defenseman Jarrod Neumann racked up 11 ground balls and 5 caused turnovers during the week. Chaos will take on Chrome at 5:30pm ET on August 4th in an intense battle to move on to the next round.
